Happy November. Happy Thanksgiving!

Wow, it’s already November!  Will the fall season upon us, we want to take this time to wish you and your students a very Happy Thanksgiving!  We are so thankful for all of our teachers and students; and we hope that the NIE program has been a valuable resource for your classroom.

Please be sure that you share these resources with your students and their parents whether you are teaching in-person or remotely.

Kid Currents – Teacher Survey

Have you used our newest resource is Kid Currents? It’s a weekly section that publishes each Wednesday in the eEdition. It’s filled with 20-pages of activities and news stories – just for kids.

Write Now

Get your students writing now! Within the Kid Currents section, each week there will be a new writing prompt,  listed under Write Now, to inspire your kids to share their thoughts on the weekly topic. Then they can submit their entry, along with a photo of their original artwork – if thy choose, for a chance to have their essay and artwork published in an upcoming issue of Kid Currents. New prompts are released each Wednesday and are due the following Tuesday. Please share with your students and their parents; here is the essay submission page.


Scripps National Spelling Bee

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is moving forward with this amazing annual event. As well, our newspapers continue to sponsor the regional spelling bees from around the country. If your school is located in one of these areas, be sure to register your school with the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

NOTE:  Early bird registration, with discounted pricing,  has been extended to December 20, 2020.

Washington Indian Tribes Today &
Essay Contest with $100 Top Prize

Learn all about the 29 Washington Indian Tribes in this 8-page educational supplement. The Washington Indian Tribes Today published in our Washington state papers on October 7, however you can download a copy on our site here.  In addition, this supplement includes activities for all grade levels, and an essay contest with prizes for Washington state students in grades 7-12.

Look for the Weekly Lesson Prompts delivered to your inbox on Mondays. Each week we will post new lesson prompts to use with the eEdition. The prompts will include a different subject topic for each day of the week and can be used to enhance your core curriculum.As well, visit the page here.

National Native American Heritage Month
On August 3, 1990 President George H. W. Bush declared the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month, thereafter commonly referred to as Native American Heritage Month. Educate your students on the rich culture and heritage of American Indian tribes. Visit the government’s website honoring this month and see this page for teaching resources and activities. As well, visit our page on the Washington Indian Tribes for even more resources and an essay contest with $100 prize!


National Aviation History Month
Aviation history refers to the history of development of mechanical flight — from the earliest attempts in kites and gliders to powered heavier-than-air, supersonic and spaceflights. View our special supplement, Celebrating Flight which chronicles the history of flight from unmanned balloons through the Wright Brothers historic first powered flight to man’s exploration of outer space. World Kindness Day (November 13)
