NIE Newsletter: September 2020

Welcome back to school!

We know that school will look a whole lot different this year due to COVID-19, and we appreciate you being part of the NIE program.  There will be challenges for teachers, students and parents and please know, we are here to help you in any way we can. We have added some new resources for you to use while teaching in-person or remotely. And please share these resources with your student and their parents so they can access them as well.

News & Announcements


Kid Currents

We are pleased to announce our new educational section called, Kid Currents. This 20-page section can be found each Wednesday in the eEdition.  It’s filled with age-appropriate activities and news stories. It’s also a tab size, so it can easily be downloaded and printed if needed.  Please check it out by logging into your account and share with your students and their parents.


Write Now

Get your students writing now! Within the Kid Currents section, each week there will be a new writing prompt,  listed under Write Now, to inspire your kids to share their thoughts on the weekly topic. Then they can submit their entry, along with a photo of their original artwork – if thy choose, for a chance to have their essay and artwork published in an upcoming issue of Kid Currents. New prompts are released each Wednesday and are due the following Tuesday. Please share with your students and their parents. Log into your account to view.


Scripps National Spelling Bee

The spelling bee may look a bit different this year, but the Scripps National Spelling Bee is still moving forward with this amazing event. As well, our newspapers continue to sponsor the regional spelling bees from around the country. If your school is located in one of these areas, be sure to register your school with the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Weekly Lesson Prompts

Starting this week, we have implemented the Weekly Lesson Prompts. Each week we will post new lesson prompts to use with the eEdition. The prompts will include a different subject topic for each day of the week and can be used to enhance your core curriculum. An email will be sent to you, as well, visit the page here.

September is also…

National Library Month. Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. Encourage your students to get their library cards and remind them that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement, lifelong learning, and fun! Family Meals Month. Now, more than ever, enjoying meals with your family is important. This is a great way to promote the value of family meals. Check out the educational resources from The Family Meals Movement to see how to get involved.


National Honey Month. Learn about the benefits of honey and honey bees. Find educational resources from  the National Bee Board.  They are committed to supporting bee health, championing pure honey, and nurturing the planet.


Autumnal Equinox. September 22 is Autumnal Equinox, which means the Fall season has officially begun! There are two equinoxes every year – in September and March – when the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal. Find some great educational resources on this history, lesson ideas, and lesson plans.
