February resources include…

Black History|African American History Month. Celebrate the rich history and pride of African Americans. We have many supplements on our site dedicated specifically to the accomplishments of African American educators, inventors, writers, musicians, and those in science and technology fields, a special Civil Rights supplement, and one on Martin Luther King, Jr. View the Black History section of our NIE site to find these excellent resources. You can also find educational resources from the National Archives, the National Education Association, and The Library of Congress.


American Heart Month. A month-long US observance, this is a great opportunity to commit to a healthy lifestyle and educate your students on how to have a lifetime of heart health by starting early with small choices. View our supplement, Healthy Habits 101 for an easy and engaging lessons on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a fun section on heart health. You can also check out the American Heart Association‘s special Educator page for activities, lesson plans, and more.

Special February Dates…

February 14 – Valentine’s Day.  Use your daily eEdition and have your students complete a fun digital activity with this NIE St. Valentines Scavenger Hunt. You can have students do this activity individually, in a small group, or as a fund and engaging activity for the entire class to participate.  As well, here are some additional resources from the National Education Association.


February 17 – Random Acts of Kindness Day.  Being kind is not just something you do for one day — it’s something that should be done every day. Good character and good citizenship go hand-in-hand. Check out these K-8 resources from The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation. And you can download this supplement, Count on Character to use as well.


February 17 – President’s Day. While several states still have individual holidays honoring the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, Presidents’ Day is now popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents, past and present. After the holiday, plan to incorporate our supplement, Electing the President: A Guide to the Election Processinto your lesson plans for the week. Here is the History of Presidents Day and some fun activities for your classes.


February 29 – Leap Year Day. It only happens once every four years, and Leap Year day happens this year! So hop on over to these fun and educational activities and lesson plans; 2020 leap year,  math facts, history, and fun activities to celebrate the day and year!


Upcoming Events


The California Central Valley Spelling Bee:   Registered school champions took the online written test and now, the top spellers will advance to the oral competition on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento. This amazing event is FREE and open to the public.   Click here for details.
